Baked Potato Toppings

posted in Vegetables and Beans by Kathy Maister

What’s great about a baked potato is that it can be eaten as a side vegetable or as a main dish. Baked potatoes are one of those meals in my house that fit the category of, “I’m really tired and I’ve gone brain dead and I really don’t feel like cooking.”
While your potato is baking in the microwave you’ll have about 7 minutes to think about what sort of topping you would like to put on it. Classic ingredients like butter, sour cream, bacon bits, and chives are always delicious. But there are tons of other choices as well!

Some of my favorite toppings include:

  • Cottage Cheese
  • Plain yogurt
  • Salsa
  • Chili
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Mushrooms fried in olive oil

Many places around the world refer to a baked potato as a “jacket potato” and use very different toppings then what people in the USA use. For example it is quite common in the UK to use baked beans or tuna salad as a topping.

What’s your favorite topping?

Kathy you missed an essential ingredient from that classic of the British lunchtime take-away – baked beans should really have cheese (preferably cheddar) grated on top! While tuna salad really needs sweetcorn mixed in.

CiCi from CA just sent me these great suggestions-Thanks CiCi!

Tater toppin’ — We are of German/Dutch heritage and our all-purpose potato topper is sour cream with chopped scallions & minced ham; another topping we serve is fresh dill & smoked salmon. These topping are usually prepared the night before it will be used. When my company has potato bar potlucks I make the ham & scallion topper and the bowl looks like it was licked clean so I think it is a big hit – LOL! CiCi in CA

Hey Will, great idea! A baked potato tuna melt! I love it!
Jon, I’m not too sure about adding the sweet corn as well? Hmmm… I’ll have to give that a try! Or better yet, next time I’m in the UK we’ll go out for a nice hearty baked potato-UK style!

Potato topping? Mmmm…

I like roasted garlic blended with butter and olive oil, topped with kosher salt , fresh ground pepper and toasted sage leaves.

It would be a pleasure to share a potato with you at some time. All you have to do is get over to London…
